Business Models for Design

This one-day seminar is in response to numerous requests for a program that examines various models for running a design business. The featured speakers represent a range of experience and will share their war stories and specific advice on running a successful practice in the new economy. Join your colleagues for presentations by John Shiple of Bigstep.com; Chris Conley of Design Research Associates and Gravity Tank; Dan Klitsner from KID; Shel Perkins of Shel Perkins & Associates; and Jeff Smith of LUNAR Design. Speakers will discuss big vs. small firm economics and dynamics; design firm economic growth; pricing design as a service; equity based fees; licensing and royalties; and staffing issues. Speakers will also address the more general issue of placing value on design's contribution to the new economy.

2000 Design Student Conference
April 7-9, 2000
Chicago, Illinois
The Design Student Conference is an annual event hosted by the American Center for Design. It provides students with the opportunity to meet each other, interact with the professional design community, and learn what it takes to build successful careers. The interdisciplinary program of this year's conference will feature design office tours, professional presentations, graduate program presentations, and portfolio reviews. In conjunction with the Student Conference will be a one-day Faculty Seminar on issues related to the future of design education. Conference attendance is limited to 400 students. Deadline for registration is March 24.

Living Surfaces Conference a Success
Approximately 420 design and business professionals attended the Seventh Annual Living Surfaces Conference. Speakers shared their visions of ubiquitous computing and its impact on their work, the economy, and society. Read about the conference in The New York Times. The conversations begun at No Where, Now Here will be continued in ACD's 2000 Design Journal, which will be edited by digital journalist Phil Patton.


The 19th 100 Show books are here!
ACD announces the publication of The 100 Show, Design Year in Review: The Nineteenth Annual of the American Center for Design. The 19th 100 Show was chaired by Michael Rock of 2x4. Judges were Somi Kim, Robin Kinross, and J. Abbott Miller. The book was designed by Michael Rock and Aline Ozkan of 2x4, New York. Price for ACD members is $35; for nonmembers, it's $40.
